Human biological systems like living tissues show an active response to changes in their mechanical environment. Not only is the intrinsic mechanical response complicated, the ability of biological systems to adapt by changing their structure, composition and function is fascinating. Within this track, principles from fluid and solid mechanics and biology are applied to a variety of biomedical problems and devices.
In particular, biomechanical aspects of pathology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of medical conditions and diseases of the cardiovascular and the musculoskeletal systems are examined using a model-based and in some cases patient-specific approach.
Research is clustered in three sections:

* Soft Tissue Biomechanics & Engineering (cell and tissue mechanics, cell and tissue engineering)
* Bone & Orthopedic Biomechanics (bone and osteoporosis, tissue differentiation, osteoarthrosis and artificial joints)
* Cardiovascular Biomechanics (cardiac mechanics, hemodynamics, biofluid mechanics)
